Better night in our lovely spot by the Playe de Rambla Elena beach as the
wave action hitting the fossilised dunes in front of us was not as bad as
the night before and sea calmer:) Woke to a nice sunny morning even if a
little hazy, exercises on beach followed by breakfast then setting off down
the coast. Stopped at a huge Carrefour at Aguilas where the staff were all
in fancy dress:) Then as we drove through the bustling harbour area we
noticed that the town was getting ready for tomorrows fiesta/carnival with
seating down the main street and barriers ready to be put out. The scenery
is lovely here all rugged mountains with the many campervans corralled in
great clumps either in nice spots near the beach or dusty aires right by
the road! We took the very good N332 road which was quiet, turning off at
Vera, past Iceland (!) and into Mojacar as the mountains just got bigger!
The architecture seems to have changed from horrible high-rise to white low
level apartments, more Greek than Spanish and much more pleasing on the
eye. Mojacar town was up in the hills but we turned down to the Playa and
counted a dozen English cars in one beach front car park with busloads of
tourists being dropped off at their hotels.
It was a nice sea front with a good prom and I noticed that the breeze had
filled in and looked promising for a sail. Then near the end of the beach
I spotted a kitesurfer out and found a parking place right by the ramp down
to the lovely sandy beach complete with wooden walkway and showers –
perfect:) While Mag walked back to the souvenir shop to treat me to a new
pack of cards for my nightly patience games:) I took the gauge down to the
beach to check the wind. There was a rock breakwater just upwind which made
it a little gusty but it was reading 20 mph and the kiter was out with 12m
so I rigged 7.8 on the 282.
I had 93 minutes out in the blue Med, sailing with the nice white
apartment’s, palm fringed beach with a mountain backdrop, just perfect.
The wind was a bit gusty but got some fast runs going broad in the smooth
swells. I put up a big shoal of small fish and spotted what I am sure was a
Gannet and possibly four Shearwaters whizzing past. Mag enjoyed her lunch
in the van and a read on the sunny prom with a cuppa. The temperature was
22 degrees and her neck was a little pink from yesterday! we are loving
this warm sunshine in February:)
Packing up at 4 we headed down the beach looking for an overnight spot, the
last town car park had a no campervan sign so we drove just around the
corner and found the perfect spot on our own on the beach looking back at
Mojacar with a small fort and lookout tower the other way. With the sun
getting ready to disappear behind the mountains we decided to walk to the
fort. We got there quickly and were intrigued by the lookout tower further
on, so continued past the beach bar surrounded by white elephant’s
(that’s big white campervans) along the track perched on the edge of the
sea to the Torre. We were surprised that you could just enter it via a
steep metal ladder and a short spiral stone stairway right to the top for
great views along the coast. It is one of three dotted in the distance.
Back to the van knackered for rotisserie chicken and salad, very yummy:)
Followed by a top sunset, another top day in sunny Spain:)
